This area starts from "Place Garibaldi", named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, who was born in Nice. A hero of the Italian unification (which was still a part of Sardinia-Piedmont at the time), who was ferociously attached to the union of Nice to Italy.

It is a crossroad between the Vieux Nice (old town) and town centre.

The re-building of the square will make this area semi-pedestrian, making it more pleasant.

Before the arriving of the new tramway the République sector was relatively undiscovered by foreign buyers.

The "avenue de la République" has been all renovated and the apartments along the tramline have shot up in price.
